Online Lessons Policy

Online Lessons Policy

Online Lessons may form either the entirety of a Student’s lesson provision or be offered as an alternative to in-person lessons in the instance of adverse weather, illness or other reasons.

  • Either EJML or the Student/ Student’s Parent/Guardian may request an online lesson on demand.

  • EJML and the Student agree to give sufficient notice for the change or lesson format.

  • Notice to switch to online lessons must be 1 hour or more and be agreed upon by both parties.  Insufficient notice or lack of agreement may mean the lesson is forfeited and no refund or alternative will be offered.

Space and Equipment

  • The Student or the Student’s Parent/Guardian is responsible for providing suitable space and appropriate technology to enable online learning to be provided as advised by EJML.

  • The Student or Student’s Parent/Guardian shall be responsible for provision of technology suitable for the online tuition and shall ensure that any applications or other technology specified by EJML for the tuition is installed and tested before online lessons commence. EJML is not responsible for the loan or supply of any equipment (e.g., instruments, cameras, computers, etc.) or materials (e.g., sheet music), unless agreed in writing in advance.

  • EJML is not liable for any delays or disruptions caused by technical difficulties of whatever nature at the Student’s home or their location for the lessons. EJML shall not be required to make up any time lost through such incidents.

  • Materials supplied electronically by EJML remain the Intellectual Property of EJML.

  • EJML is not liable for any technical faults (e.g., insufficient or unreliable broadband to support audio and video, poor sound quality, computer hardware and software problems, etc.), failures of or damage of equipment used at the Student’s premises or elsewhere for the purposes of receiving online teaching and will not be required to make up any lost teaching time caused by such faults, failures or damage. Moving equipment in order to enhance the quality of video/audio is done at the Student’s or the Student’s Parent or Guardian’s risk.

  • The Student or the Student’s Parent/Guardian is responsible for the insurance of the Student’s instrument and all equipment used by the Student for online teaching.

  • Both EJML and Student should present against a neat and tidy background when using video.

Safeguarding

  • The parties agree that safeguarding in the online environment is of paramount importance and agree that they shall observe best practice and professional guidance (such as advice to teachers from the ISM or MU) in safeguarding and child protection at all times.

  • The Student or Student’s Parent or Guardian agrees to follow any safeguarding requirements specified by EJML.

  • Lessons must not be recorded by either party unless there is a prior agreement for this. If recordings are made, they must not be shared with third parties or uploaded to social media.

  • The online teaching platform must not be used by the parties for any other purpose than teaching, e.g., sharing photos or general messaging.

  • Where possible the Student or the Student’s Parent/Guardian should assist the Student in limiting their profile within the online teaching app, using settings and preferences to maximise privacy.  EJML will commit to doing the same.

  • The Pupil, if aged 18 or under, will not contact the Teacher directly by any means for whatever reason: all communications relating to the lessons shall be made between the Pupil’s Parent or Guardian and the Teacher preferably by email except in an emergency such as unavoidable cancellation of a lesson at the last minute, where telephone use is acceptable.

  • Inappropriate behaviour or use of inappropriate or unlawful materials during the lessons by the Pupil may result in the Teacher terminating the lesson immediately and the teacher reserves the right to terminate the agreement with immediate effect, in which case the Teacher shall not be required to refund any fees previously paid.

  • EJML agrees to comply with the MU’s & ISM’s safeguarding advice in relation to online teaching. Current advice is available on their websites.

  • EJML has a current DBS or Disclosure Scotland certificate.

  • Both EJML and Student must dress appropriately for the online lesson.
